i agree with the fact that main reason behind our laking in field hockey is the change in style we are doing as it is said in Urdu proverb where one make ones face red by slapping...
i think the real legends should come forward and teach the real Pakistani hockey style to the current team so that the real glory of Pakistan can come out again. i have an emotional bond with hockey and that is why its harsh to see them loosing whats what i said in one of my blog post :http://mylandpakistan.blogspot.com/2010/03/my-love-with-hockey-is-emotional.html

Your words does walk one down memory lane to a time when hockey was as much a part of a child's youth as gali cricket. For me field hockey has always been a sport near my heart and one that I played throughout my secondary school days at Saint Patrick's. I remember waking early in the morning in my summer vacations to go to the hockey camp in school and playing there. I remember going to the hockey stadium to watch matches regularly and could name every player with ease.

My departure for university in the US killed my passion when I was starved of the sport there (field hockey being played only by women there). During this time the sport atrophied in Pakistan, mostly due to lack of astro-turfs being installed and our men losing their competitive edge somewhat. In addition, the over glorification of cricket especially post-world cup 1992 led to this game being removed from the hearts and minds as our national sport.

Hockey has been replaced somewhat by soccer as a alternate game to cricket but hockey is a unique sport. In soccer your control over the ball depends on your legs; in hockey the hockey stick must be wielded expertly so as to almost become an extension of your body. Thus, it requires considerable higher level of dexterity. Inaddition, it requires optimum eye-hand-foot coordination.

Sadly, our government has never promoted the sport and I remember hockey players being grossly underpaid as compared to hockey. This and other factors led to the death of Pakistan hockey and we were permanently dethroned from the champions to the has-beens.
